Building Leadership Team

Description:

I am a member of the Building Leadership Team at Thurgood Marshal Elementary where I help principal and other staff make important decisions about school budgets and other school practices.  

Analysis:

Each Seattle Public School has a Building Leadership Team. This team is a mix of parents and staff at the Elmentary School. School Budgets and other important decisions go through this committee that is headed by the school principal. I helped make decisions about the school budget for school year 2016-2017. It is a two-year commitment.  The team meets once a month during the school year.

Reflection:

Being on the Building Leadership Team has given me insight into public school systems. Before being on this team, I did not understand the intricacies and decision-making that even elementary schools have to make. This gives me a lens that can help me in an employment situation and is a good usage of my critical thinking skills. One of the decisions that I was able to influence was a name change of the general education students  to “scholars”.
