Communicating Social Justice to Donors

Description:  During my practicum with Program Impact at IslandWood, I developed a document that sought to overcome barriers between potential donors and the demographic they would be helping. The document, “Communicating Social Justice with Donors,” gave strategies for organizations in communicating social justice work with donors.

Analysis: The document I made contained research from people in the philanthropic and social justice field. Essentially, research showed that best practices for communicating social justice to donors is with concrete examples of work being done instead of the mainstream term “social justice”.  I included action steps on the document to help organizations implement new strategies of communication with donors.

Reflection: Before doing this project, I had not thought about philanthropy or had any understanding of the field. Doing this research and making the document has sparked an interest in me to go into the philanthropic field in the future. I believe I understand how important communication is in philanthropy and that I have a lot to offer in that realm.
